Paypal App for Paying in Store – “Unable to get preferred payment method”

My preferred payment method is my checking account. However, when I proceed to try to pay using the mobile app for Dollar General, located on the screen where you swipe for the 4 digit code to enter at the store, the bottom reads “Unable to get preferred payment method”. I’ve been too afraid to try to proceed to pay via paypal b/c of this message, to avoid any embarrassment. I can’t find anything on this message anywhere…can someone help??  Can I not use the checking account as preferred method when using paypal this way?
