Paid for an item on the 17th Feb. no delivery invalid tracking number,

Bought an ebay 99p bargain and in the listing the seller says Hermes will be used for delivery.  After a week I had no despatch shown  and I messaged the seller to ask if the item had been despatched and tracking details. No response to my message. A tracking number is now showing and ‘despatched’, but on the Hermes site it comes up as an ‘invalid number’.  I will use the resolution centre to try to recover my payment, but wonder if there is investigation into this tracking numbe, or  if the ebay staff just accept the seller’s detail .  Any thoughts welcomed please.
