PayPal balance is no longer my default funding source

I have plenty of money in my PayPal account, but I’ve noticed recently that whenever I use PayPal (buying stuff from eBay, paying directly for goods/services from PayPal, or when sending money to friends/family), the funding source always defaults to my backup (in my case a credit card). I didn’t notice this setting a couple times and wound up paying with my backup. I’m training myself to be more careful about this.

I was under the impression that PayPal would always use your balance to make payments except when you didn’t have a big enough balance. Has this default changed? (Was I somehow mistaken about how it used to work?) Is there a setting which controls this (I didn’t find one)? I called PayPal a few days ago, and got no useful help, other than a long wait on hold and agreement from the call center staffer that I should be getting funds from my account balance by default. I sent PayPal a message a couple days ago, but have not heard back from them. I’m hoping someone here in the community knows what’s going on and how to remedy the problem. If nothing else, it would help to know if other people are experiencing the same problem, so I don’t think I’m the only person with this problem. Misery, after all, loves company. 🙂
